Dealing with Suppliers and Vendors
Making an Agreement with Vendors
Vendors and suppliers are considered by entrepreneurs as their business partners. However, to become successful in any business, a person should be able to know how to deal with these people, without being too passive or too demanding. Meanwhile, there are effective ways which must be adopted that will allow anyone to get the best deal with their suppliers.
Successful entrepreneurs should be able to deal with suppliers and vendors without being too passive that they agree to any condition presented to them or too demanding that they end up pushing those people who might help them maximize their profit.
To effectively deal with vendors and suppliers, here are some helpful tips that will allow entrepreneurs to come up with the best business transaction:
Communicate with several vendors
One of the most common mistakes of people is communicating with a limited number of vendors. To get the best bargain and contract that will provide the best benefit, it is important to communicate with as many vendors as possible.
Do not listen to vendors passively
Vendors have the tendency to over-glorify their products and services and give promises they are not even sure to fulfill. To avoid being swept by smooth talkers, entrepreneurs can do their own researching (e.g. Internet browsing, seeking experts’ advice) and should also ask vendors things they want to clarify.
Do not allow vendors to make all the terms and conditions
Successful entrepreneurs should not passively allow vendors to make all the terms and conditions. While compromise is always the name of the game in business, haggling can be helpful in getting the best deal for entrepreneurs.
Make a written contract
Many corporate lawyers will agree that creating a written contract will avoid disputes between vendors and their clients and will also provide solutions in case a problem arises. For example, a contract stated that a retail store will only pay the supplier for the bread it would sell and return the expired ones. With this condition, a supplier cannot demand the store owner to pay all the products which are not sold.
Ask for referrals
Ask other business owners or even ordinary consumers about the best suppliers and vendors. The reason for this is simple: paid advertisement is often unreliable and bias while word-of-mouth referrals are often made by satisfied clients.
Do not just focus on the product, but also on the vendors
A high-quality product or service is not enough. Vendors should also be professional and responsible that they will be able to perform all their duties to their business clients.
Maintain a list of vendors
Because the business climate is constantly changing, successful entrepreneurs often maintain a list of vendors, whom they do not even have a business yet, but may be important in case they want to try a new venture or want to restructure their business.
