Establishing Work Ethics in Office
Promoting Moral Values in Workplace
Promoting moral values in workplace is very important for any business as it will establish an environment where employees will be responsible for any of their action.
According to occupational psychologists, most successful businessmen own a company where there is a strong work ethics among employees.
A good work ethics among workers provides several advantages to employers: one of these is maximizing the productivity, thus boosting the profits. With such benefits, anyone who wants to be successful in any business should be able to establish a strong moral value among workers.
Here are some tips to establish work ethics in office:
Make a clear and comprehensive employment policy
By making a well-written employment policy, workers will know their duties, responsibilities, and the expected behavior for them. For example, a company created a contract requiring workers to do their tasks, give high-quality services or satisfactory work, and have an attitude that will not create an abusive and offensive environment to anyone in the workplace.
The employment policy should also include the consequences (e.g. suspension, termination, removal of benefits) employees will face after failing to do their obligations or causing harm to their company or co-workers. Penalties should not be excessive or lenient; it should be the most appropriate.
Make rules which can be justified
Every rule should have its own purpose and should not violate the rights of workers. For example, an employer requires his workers to be clean-shaved. While this may seem like a harmless policy, it may cause negative impact to certain ethnic groups such as Muslims who believe that a turf on a chin symbolizes their religious devotion. In legal perspective, doing this is a violation of a federal law (discrimination based on religion) and will make employers liable for a lawsuit.
Set an example
No matter how much training, programs, and policy the employers and top officials will give to their workers, if they fail to set an example themselves, all such efforts will be put to waste. For example, a manager has told employees to be punctual despite that he was always late for work. With this attitude, it is obvious that the manager failed to do what he preached.
Make it known that violators will face consequences
While employment policy can establish strong moral values among workers, it will serve no purpose if employers and top officials will not punish those who will violate the policies. According to occupational psychologists, when companies fail to implement its policies, workers will become irresponsible and will continue any unlawful and harmful act they are doing without thinking of consequences for their actions.
Give rewards
Employers should give rewards to workers who provide impressive service to the company. By giving rewards (e.g. salary raise, benefits, promotion), other employees will be inspired to excel in their jobs.
