Small Business Books on Short List

Among those most recommended must-read books are The One Minute Manager by Kenneth H. Blanchard and Spencer Johnson. It's an inspirational book about the challenges one man met in creating his own business. It tells in a lively narrative, the many typical problems many entrepreneurs encounter when they start their own business. The book tells the secrets on how to become a successful entrepreneur. It also includes advice from other entrepreneurs and thinkers.

Another is In Search of Excellence by Thomas J. Peters and Robert H. Waterman. The book, which is one of many best sellers co-authored by Mr. Peters, is based on a study of America's 43 best-run companies from different sectors. It illustrates the eight basic management principles that help make business organizations successful.

In The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey, a writer, and speaker, inspires people towards personal development. It aims to help people live a full life that is filled with purpose. The seven habits that he describes are what he calls the habit of self renewal.

The E-Myth by Michael E. Gerber is based on the author's observations about small businesses. It defines the role of business owners, and that is, being independent and separate from themselves, so that they don't get eaten by the job of running it, and they create not a job for themselves but an idea that can be duplicated from one place to another.

Built to Last by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras outlines the ideas on what makes companies -- well, what else -- last. Based on research, the authors want to identify characteristics common to highly visionary companies, and share that information to business managers.
